“Over the past months, we have seen a significant increase in ingredient and material costs driven by the war in the Middle East, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This has had a cascading effect across a wide range of raw materials and packaging materials that are either oil-derived or dependent on trade routes through the region.
After the US military intervention in Iran, we have seen 20-30% price increases on packaging such as foil wrappers and plastics. Latex costs have increased 30%. Nitrile, our new non-latex condom material, has increased 100%. Condom lubricant, which is made from silicone oil, has increased 25%.
We will not be passing these extra costs to the consumer yet, until we see if they are temporary. But if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, not only will our cost increases get worse – but we may end up with condom shortages due to lack of raw materials to make enough condoms to meet consumer demand. In addition to cost increases, availability of raw materials has become a key challenge. Many of the raw materials are now facing supply constraints or are intermittently out of stock.
Ironically, this has been like adding fuel to the fire since we are still struggling to adapt to tariffs. We haven’t been able to raise prices or cut costs enough to cover current tariff expenses. Our goal remains to keep condoms available at affordable prices, but the conflict in the Middle East threatens to make that mission impossible.
The lack of oil has additional impacts across the supply chain. Condom manufacturing happens mostly in Southeast Asia, where the climate is ideal for rubber trees. Southeast Asia relies heavily on oil from the Middle East, and some countries are taking major actions. This includes rationing the availability of oil to the consumer, and issuing stay-at-home orders as commutes have become too expensive for workers and students. This crisis has moved past the balance sheet—it’s now a fundamental disruption of how the world moves, works, and lives."
